Demons Silence Tigers Roar
// April 19th, 2009 // Demons
Today’s football game between the Melbourne Demons and the Richmond Tigers was a must-win for both. Both teams have been notorious under performers and currently this season, both have lost every game.
Not only was a win important for both teams, Richmond coach Terry Wallace has been under the pump with papers claiming if his Tigers didnt win against the Demons, his coaching career at Richmond was over.
The Red and Blue got over the line 14. 16. 100, to 13. 14. 92.
As it happens, today’s game was an away game for Melbourne, even though it was played at the MCG, so my family planned to watch the game at home…on delayed live telecast.
We watched the first quarter on tv at home. Richmond started out well, scoring the first two goals of the game, before Melbourne jumped into the game, with swift handballs and a running game. The end of the 1st quarter was 18 - 15.
In the 2nd quarter, Melbourne dominated and went into half time about 30 points ahead. By the time half time was on tv, my mum and I had already left the house in hopes to see the Demons come with a win!
When mum and I rocked upto the MCG, it was already part way into the last quarter with only a small lead on the Tigers. We ran through the gates down to the front behind the goals with Demons fans. Little did we know we’d entered the cheer squad area.
For the rest of the game we constantly were cheering “Melbourne *clap* *clap* *clap*” And laughing in the process.
You could cut the tension with a knife nearing the final whistle. It was any teams game. Richmond were fighting back in desperation, whilst the Demons were just trying to hang on. When the final whistle blew, all of the Demons fans jumped up and erupted with screams. The 2008 season saw 3 wins from 22 games. Now in 2009 the Demons are at 1 win 3 losses.
This win means a lot!
After the match we went to an after-match function for champagnes and met up with some of the Melbourne players, including future Brownlow Medalist Jack Watts (pictured above).
My Brownlow Medal votes: Aaron Davey, Brad Miller, Colin Sylvia.
